Language and Logic on Healthcare Settings

It is important to understand the logic of every statement and arguments being presented to an individual. Considering a scenario wherein one of the nurses under the charge nurses supervision presented several arguments about issues in the labor and delivery department of the hospital. Among these issues the nurse wanted to address is the insufficient training that some nurses have rendering them unable to handle proper deliveries. Moreover, the nurse also asserted the insufficient number of nurses that handles such deliveries in varying shifts, thus the volume of mothers entering the labor and delivery room are not fully accommodated. It also shows that the nurses in the delivery and labor department are not being reimbursed and compensated properly based on the working hours they are applying. These challenges that the nurse presented are major factors in the increasing numbers of infant mortality during labor and delivery.

The first argument of the nurse is the insufficient and inadequate training that these nurses are getting in performing labor and deliveries. This shows to be an informative use of language (Kemerling, 2001). This claim can be verified based on the presented facts and figures as well as the educational background of the nurses and the duration of their nursing practice and experiences. It also shows itself as an opinion since the facts and figures has not yet been established (Iyer and Aiken, 2001). The idea must be challenged, however, in order to identify the major premises of the issue. Critical thinking would then result to further investigation and analysis of the situation based on the sufficiency of the training that the labor and delivery nurses obtained making them capable of handling basic, intermediate and even advanced labor and delivery situations (Elder and Paul, 2007).

The second argument that the nurse has presented is the insufficient number of nurses working on particular shifts rendering them unable to accommodate and handle the volume of mothers entering the labor and delivery room. This is also an informative type of language use and can be considered as an opinion since nurse staffing must be checked first in order to verify and evaluate the statement. The nurses schedules as well as the number of nurses on duty must be checked against the number of mothers being accommodated in the labor and delivery room.

The nurse also asserted the issue of not having the proper reimbursement and compensation of most nurses based on the number of hours they have rendered. Such issue must be challenged as well based on the budget allocation being applied to the hospital especially on the operations and compensation department (GAO, 2000). The reimbursement must be checked based on the number of hours that the nurses have rendered and have it applied on the total amount of reimbursement that they must be entitled to. The second statement can also be incorporated in checking the compensation of nurses since having few nurses on different shifts would result in lesser nurses being compensated.

Lastly, the nurses integrated these statements and have it considered as factors for the increasing number of infant mortality during labor and delivery. This is a statement of opinion since disagreement may rise on the supervisors part as this should be checked against the number of infant mortality and have it further assessed based on the cause of mortality and the major attributes that affect these situations.

Issues and challenges can further be assessed and evaluated by means of using critical thinking properly. This will help an individual conduct effective researches and proper means and strategies of addressing them (Brem and Boyes, 2000). Examining the claims by means of its factuality also helps in addressing a problem more effectively.
