The pursuit of ones goals and dreams are journeys that oftentimes take a lifetime to accomplish.  There are those who reach the end of their lives not accomplishing what they wanted to do because they were either too intimidated by the prospect of even embarking on such a quest or they did not have the right opportunities in life.  I have been working for a number of years and during that time I have had plenty of time to see my career develop as my life passed by.  Yet, there comes a certain point in ones life when one must make a firm decision, a commitment to something much more than ones own personal goals.  Oftentimes, this means sacrificing one for the other.  There are those, however, who are lucky enough to have their own personal goals and that pursuit for higher objectives converge.  This is why I have chosen to pursue my career in physical therapy at this prestigious academic institution.

One of the motivating factors for me to pursue this comes from the fact that I realize that the role of physical therapy is something that several people have discounted because it does not seem as important or life changing as other medical vocations such as medicine or nursing.  While there are no open heart surgeries or brain scans in this profession, this does not alter the fact that the training I can receive here has the chance to impact the lives of hundreds if not thousands.  I have always seen physical therapy as a life saving profession.  The simple things such as ensuring that a person is in good physical condition or regular checking on how people recuperate from their injuries is a very serious function.  It ensures that people are able to resume their normal functions and move on with their lives.

An ounce of prevention is always better than a pound of cure.  I have always subscribed to this belief and find even more reason these days to convince others of that fact.  I have realized that there are several injuries and illnesses that are caused by poor physical conditioning and that the incidence of partial and delayed recovery is often caused by inattention to physical therapy.  This, I believe, is one of the main functions of physical therapy to help prevent all of the injuries and ailments that can essentially shorten or even take away the lives of people.  It is never the same when one is handicapped by certain physical injuries.  Life is never the same for several of these patients as I have witnessed firsthand during my work in different hospitals.

My work as an Intern at the My Home Adult Day Care Center has provided me with hands on experience in working with senior citizens.  It has allowed me to envision a career that not only combines my personal goals but my professional goals as well.  I have many very special characteristics that make the profession of physical therapy one that I will not only excel at, but one that I know will provide me with great opportunity to meet and treat my community.  Although an excellent student, my ability to listen to people has helped me to excel both professionally and personally.  Too often people are misdiagnosed, misheard and not heard at all because of the time constraints forced on the profession by the high number of patients and insurance constraints. This was not always a characteristic I would consider my strongest, but after realizing the importance of listening to people I decided to change my own behavior, and even change my small part of the world.  The ability to hear people, to really listen, has transformed my life in a positive and crucial way.

Given the different other fields and professions that an individual can practice today, many people wonder why I have chosen to select the career of a physical therapist and labor the long hours for the relatively reasonable salary that I receive.  I have always held that my continued dedication to this line of work is based on my passion for caring and helping other people.  I believe that this profession is one of the ways by which I am able to do something that I really want to do in my life and that is to care and help other people.
Pursuing my career in physical therapy is just the first step in my plan.  I would like to have the opportunity to take a bigger role in making the world a better place to live.  My main philosophy in life is to lead by setting an example. I cannot expect others to do what I myself would be willing to do but that does not mean that I cannot hope that others will see the example that I have shown them.  This philosophy is one of the many forces that drive me to pursue my dream of pursuing a career in physical therapy and of becoming so much more in life.  The chance to help those who are less fortunate in life, the chance to help those in need, the opportunity to be of service to humanity these are the reasons why I have selected this as the profession that I will pursue for, as Eleanor Roosevelt once said, The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams
