Role of the manager in modern health care

The role of health care managers has changed overtime due to the changing needs in the community and changing external environment this has made the modern health care manager to have diverse roles for smooth running of health institutions (Walter et al, 1998, 145). Some of the major roles include

The Manager as a Designer
The modern health care manager acts as a designer in many aspects in the health institutions which includes.

Change agent
The manager has the role of implementing changes in the organization. He is responsible for setting the platform for change in the organization. This is by making sure that the employee in the organization accepts changes and change is implemented in the right way to avoid resistance. The manager identifies the needed changes in the institution and plans how these changes can be implemented without negatively affecting the functioning of the institution.

Innovation
The manager is responsible for setting a good environment for innovation in the health care. The manger has the role of creating environment for the employees to develop innovative ideas. The manager creates a program that appreciates employees who come up with better ways of doing their tasks.

The manager has also the role of providing facilities for the institution for innovation purposes. These facilities are then provided with the right professionals for research and development. This encourages the institution to develop new technologies that contribute positively to growth in health care.

Quality improvement
The manager has the role of ensuring continuous improvement of services being rendered in the institution. This is through creating various changes in the operations of the institution. The manger has the role of analyzing the processes and operations that are carried in the organization and device ways in which these activities can be carried out in a better way (Buchbinder, Shanks, 2007, p.78).

The manager improves the activities through provision of quality facilities in the organization which are able to match with the consumers needs. The manager also has the role to provide training to the entire stakeholders in the organization so that as a team they can improve the functioning of the institution. They are also responsible for providing professional training to employees so that they can improve the services being rendered in the institution.

Human resources
The manager has the role of equipping the organization with adequate staff. He should be able to fill the organization structure with the right people for each position. He makes sure that the organization is equipped with a good work force that is able to provide the needed services to consumers. The manager has the role to provide training and development of employees. This is in order to improve the quality of work force in the organization. 

Motivation
The modern health care managers have the role of developing a good motivation program in the organization. The motivation program should be designed in such a way that all the employees in the organization are highly motivated to carry out their duties. He has the responsibility of identifying different groups in the organization and of developing different motivation strategies.

The manager develops a program that makes employees feel part of the organization and work hard for the success of it. The program should be able to recognize and reward employees who have good performance in the company. Through this program, the organization is able to develop hard working employees who enable the achievement of its objectives.

Management of information systems

The manager has a responsibility of developing a good information system for monitoring the activities in the organization. He needs the information system for analyzing the cost for various activities in the company. The information will help him in keeping the cost of operation of the organization low. It has become very important today to integrate the medical records and the financial records in health institutions. This is to enable the managers analyze the performance of the institution and to help them in planning for various services in the institution (Palfreyet al, 2004, p.143).

The information system is also important for the manager to monitor the external and internal environment of the organization. This information will enable the manager to adapt the institution to changes occurring. The data from the information system helps the manager in making key decisions in the organization. The manager has the responsibility to develop an information system that matches the information needs of the company. He should also be able to commission continuous improvement of the organization to match with changing technology (Kimberly, Minvielle, 2000, p.246).

Manager as a Strategist
Leadership

A modern healthcare manager has a role of providing leadership to the organization. He should provide direction to the employees for the company. He has responsibility of providing a shared vision to the organization members. Through this role the manager acts as a reference point to the success of the organization (Shortell, Kaluzny, 2000, p.54).
 Manager being a leader develops trust among the employees such that the employees can trust the kind of decision he makes. This makes the employees be motivated in their actions which make them work hard so that they can achieve the organizations objectives.

Planning
The manager has a role for planning the activities in the organization. He has the responsibility of analyzing all the internal and external factors affecting the organization and come up with a good plan on how to adapt it. A manager has the responsibility of coming up with the organizations strategic plans. He should develop good plans of the future position of the company and set up programs to drive the organization towards achieving its mission (Shortell, Kaluzny, 1997, p. 243).

How a manager can improve the quality of health care
 A manager can improve the quality of health care through good planning of all activities in the organization. This can be achieved by involving all the stakeholders in the health care institution. The manager should come up with a good plan that integrates all the aspects of health care which includes services, facilities, and the finances. He should then sell these ideas to all the parties involved so as to receive acceptance and for easier implementation (McLaughlin, Kaluzny, 2004, p.145).

 The health care manager can improve the quality of health service by involving the services of professionals in planning. This will ensure that professionalism is employed in all areas of operations. It will also enable the organization to undertake viable projects and avoid wastage of the resources. The professionals can advice the organization on various fields of management which they are expert in. The professionals may be employed internally or external through consultancy (LighteFair, 2004, p.68).
