It may be very difficult to relate ethics and business, but often their relationship can be compared to a matrimonial, wherein certain moral obligations exist such as loyalty, commitments, responsibilities, absence of unethical attitudes, ensuring ethical principles whilst making gains, maintaining a responsible relationship with all the stakeholders and society, etc. If the family works within the moral and ethical framework, then it would obtain a good social respect, and all the stakeholders involved would be happy (Rajan, 2009).
Moral obligations in business ethics-
Loyalty the partners and the business should ensure that they are loyal to all the stakeholders to ensure that this commitment can help the organization move forward. Trust and mutual respect along with good communication and strong interactions can help basic ethical and moral needs to be fulfilled.
Absence of unethical attitudes All unethical relationships would do a lot of harm to the business organization and can siphon off huge resources from the organization. These would damage the trustworthiness and mutual respect the stakeholders have for each other.
Ensuring ethical principles whilst maintaining gains Any corrupt practices adopted by the organization to make a quick buck can profit only short term monetary benefits for a few stakeholders, but would be seriously damaging for the entire organization in the long-run. Unfair practices, discrimination, exploitation of scarce resources, artificially manipulating the prices, compromising the quality of the services, etc, in order to make a quick buck would do no good to the organization in the long run and hence each of the stakeholders would later suffer.
Maintaining a responsible relationship with the stakeholders and the society the society should be given great importance along with each and every other stakeholder. Social accounting forms an important part of the business ethics and every organization has to give an account of every resource that has been borrowed from the society. If the organization is going to cheat the society, then in the future the success of the organization would not look bright as the society would not trust and confide in the organization. Ultimately, it is the society which would help to build and develop the organization and hence, the organization should have full respect and concern for the needs of the society. In times of a crisis, the society can help the organization to recover and act as a rescuer.
In healthcare, experts consider that financial model (in which cost are spend only in case profits are expected) would not apply to the healthcare sector. However, such a model may apply provided that several other issues are taken into consideration. For example, the patient before choosing a procedure needs to be provided all the medical information along with financial information so as to make a decision.
The patient may go in for a procedure which is less effective or less safe in order to escape paying high costs. However, in healthcare insurance and other sponsorship programs should be available to ensure that the patient receives the quality of the highest order, in a life-threatening situation (Oddo, 2004). Often it has been seen that the best run organizations in the healthcare sector are those which work for a noble cause or for non-profit concerns. A sense of purpose should exist in a business organization to ensure that it can survive in the market. This sense should be more than just fulfilling the objectives of business ethics. On the other hand, there may be healthcare providers that work only for service. The growing costs may make the organizations functions unsustainable and difficult to perform, thus ending up with providing nothing for the public (Gilmart, 2001).
An organization should strongly consider applying the principles of business and ethics along with ensuring wellbeing of the customers (in the form of health for the patients and the society). This would ensure profitability and ensure survival in the market, where competition exists (Cragg, 2009).
